The Omar Barnett Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. The organization helps women and young girls who have been sexually or physically abused start a new chapter in their life. Many times that means they need a place to stay, financial support and they need therapy. The damage that was done to them physically goes away quickly but the emotional scars they carry inside take much longer to erase.
The Omar Barnett Foundation will create transitional housing facilities in the U.S., Mexico & Jamaica to help as many women and young children as possible. The reality is women being abused either physically, mentally or sexually has historically happened but not much has been done about it.
Below are a few staggering statistics:
* Globally, an estimated 736 million women—almost one in three—have been subjected to intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both at least once in their life (30 per cent of women aged 15 and older).
* Most violence against women is perpetrated by current or former husbands or intimate partners. More than 640 million women aged 15 and older have been subjected to intimate partner violence.
* 85% of girls who are in the juvenile hall system are there for human trafficking.
The founder Omar Barnett, decided to start the organization after finding out these statistics from his fiancé. He knew he had to do something to help these women. His fiancé Elvira Guzman is passionate about helping abused women after volunteering at juvenile halls in Los Angeles several years ago. Since then she has created several events to help the kids in juvenile hall and she has donated to various transitional housing facilities in Jamaica and the U.S. Together they hope to help as many women and young children as possible.
